Learning Support Programs & Academic Development
Every student deserves to be supported, valued and assisted in achieving their best. At the heart of our teaching and learning philosophy is the belief that academic support is not just helpful, it is essential to student growth and success.
The Learning Support and Enhanced Learning program is designed to meet students where they are, providing the right level of guidance and encouragement so they can move forward with confidence. With the support of our Literacy Coach and a team of dedicated Teacher’s Aides, students receive targeted academic assistance that helps unlock potential and build strong foundations for future learning.
The Role of the Literacy Coach in Junior School
A key part of the support framework is the Literacy Coach, who works closely with both teaching staff and students across all Junior school levels. This role strengthens literacy outcomes by ensuring that teaching practices are effective, aligned, and responsive to student needs.
- Professional Development for Staff – Teachers are supported through ongoing professional learning opportunities that provide strategies for reading, writing, and spelling instruction. These sessions foster a shared, evidence-based approach to literacy across classrooms.
- Collaborative Planning and Implementation – The Literacy Coach partners with classroom teachers to design and implement literacy programs that are tailored to the specific needs of each class.
- Data-Driven Instruction – Student performance data is used to identify areas for growth, guiding instructional adjustments and improving overall student outcomes.
Targeted Support from Teacher’s Aides
Teacher’s Aides play a vital role in bringing personalised support directly to students across both Junior and Secondary levels. Their presence within the classroom allows for focused assistance that complements teacher instruction and helps ensure no student is left behind.
- Small Group and Individual Support – Students receive direct support in small groups during class time, as well as individual reading sessions before school. These interactions reinforce classroom learning and address specific literacy challenges.
- Implementation of Differentiated Instruction – Recognising that students learn at different paces and in different ways, Teacher’s Aides support the delivery of tailored instruction that meets students where they are and moves them forward.
A Commitment to Differentiated Learning
Recognising the diversity of learning styles across the student body, the program is built on a strong commitment to differentiated instruction. This approach ensures that each child has access to learning experiences suited to their individual needs, strengths, and readiness.
Key principles of this approach include:
- Providing multiple entry points for students to engage with literacy concepts
- Adjusting tasks and expectations based on student progress
- Offering flexible ways for students to demonstrate their understanding
By embracing differentiated learning, the College fosters an inclusive and equitable classroom environment where all students can participate fully and confidently in their learning.
Working Together to Support Every Learner
The success of the Learning Support and Enhanced Learning program is a result of strong collaboration between the Literacy Coach, Teacher’s Aides, and classroom teachers. By working together, staff are able to respond to student needs in a consistent, coordinated, and timely way.
This unified approach ensures that:
- Instructional strategies are aligned across classrooms
- Students receive personalised support in a familiar, classroom-based setting
- Ongoing communication among staff enhances student progress tracking and planning
