Our Faith and Its Influence

The foundation of St Mark’s College is deeply rooted in the Coptic Orthodox faith and its rich history.

St Mark the Evangelist – Our Patron Saint

St Mark the Evangelist, one of the four Gospel writers, founded Christianity in Egypt in the 1st century AD and established the Coptic Orthodox Church. His symbol, the winged lion, represents the power and majesty of Christ, and his teachings continue to inspire our College community.

The Coptic Orthodox Church – A Legacy of Faith

One of the world’s oldest Christian communities, the Coptic Orthodox Church has preserved Christ’s teachings for over 2,000 years through its unwavering commitment to faith, worship, and service.

Leadership of the Coptic Orthodox Church

As the 118th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St Mark, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II leads the Coptic Orthodox Church worldwide with a profound commitment to faith, unity, and spiritual growth. Since his enthronement in 2012, he has been a beacon of wisdom and humility, advocating for stronger Christian education, interfaith dialogue, and deeper engagement with youth.

His Holiness has played a transformative role in modernising the Church’s approach to education and pastoral care, ensuring that Coptic schools, Sunday Schools, and theological institutions continue to equip future generations with faith-based knowledge and moral guidance. Under his leadership, the Church has expanded its outreach, reinforcing its mission to serve communities through acts of charity, education, and spiritual enrichment.

A firm believer in the importance of unity, His Holiness has strengthened relationships between the Coptic Orthodox Church and other Christian denominations, promoting peaceful dialogue and mutual understanding. He has also been a vocal advocate for human rights, religious freedom, and the protection of persecuted Christians worldwide.

At Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox College, we are blessed to be part of this sacred tradition, inspired by His Holiness’ vision of faith, learning, and service. His leadership reminds us that education is not just about knowledge, but about shaping individuals who walk in the light of Christ with love, wisdom, and purpose.

His Grace Bishop Daniel, Bishop of the Diocese of Sydney and its Affiliated Regions, is a devoted spiritual leader, guiding the Coptic Orthodox community in Australia with wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to Christ’s teachings. Since his enthronement, he has worked diligently to strengthen the Church’s presence in Australia, ensuring that faith, education, and community service remain central to the lives of Coptic Orthodox Christians.

A strong advocate for Christian education, His Grace plays an instrumental role in supporting and overseeing Coptic schools, including Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox College. His leadership extends beyond pastoral care—he is actively involved in expanding educational opportunities, fostering youth engagement, and promoting spiritual growth through liturgical services and community outreach.

Through his dedication to service, His Grace continues to preserve the rich traditions of the Coptic Orthodox faith while also encouraging active participation in modern society.
